Square dancing is the Official Colorado State Folk dance. It is also the Nation's Official Folk dance as signed by President Regan in 1982. It's history goes back to the early 1900's. It died out as communities urbanized. In 1923 Henry Ford brought it back to life and Thomas Edison began producing square dance records. Best of all in the 1930's Colorado's own Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw brought about modern square dancing. In 1938, he organized students to perform demonstration dances from California to New York. Now there is square dancing all over the world and even though you may not understand the accents, square dancing is called in English no matter where you go.
It is truly "FRIENDSHIP SET TO MUSIC."
